SETPOINT firmware can be upgraded by following the instructions on this page.  A firmware version summary is also included in the table below, listing the features introduced with each new firmware release. 

NOTE: Firmware upgrades are cumulative rollups; i.e., the latest firmware also includes all features from prior releases.

 
HOW TO UPGRADE FIRMWARE
  1. Download and install the latest version of Setup & Maintenance Software.  This software is compatible with all versions of rack hardware and contains all applicable versions of rack firmware, regardless of module type or optional touchscreen. Individual firmware files do not need to be downloaded separately. 

    NOTE: Rack modules use a USB cable connection to upgrade their firmware.  The optional touchscreen display uses an SD memory card to upgrade its firmware.  When upgrading a touchscreen, make certain that the computer on which you are running Setup & Maintenance Software has an SD or SDHC card slot and that you have a blank, formatted SD or SDHC card.  The file written to the memory card is small (less than 25 MB) so virtually any size SD (up to 2GB) or SDHC (up to 32GB) card can be used.  However, the SETPOINT rack does not support the new SDXC format (32GB to 2TB) so do not attempt to use an SD card with a capacity of more than 32 GB.   

  2. Look for the shortcut called Setpoint Rack Maintenance on your desktop (or Programs >>  Setpoint >> Setpoint Rack Maintenance).  Launch the software.
     
  3. Connect to your SETPOINT rack using a USB cable.  It may take a few moments for the software to automatically detect the rack and connect.  The status in the software will change from NOT CONNECTED to UPDATING to CONNECTED.  If you have difficulty connecting and are using a 32-bit version of Windows 7, it may be necessary to install an updated USB driver on your computer.  You can obtain an updated driver from our Software Downloads page. 
     
  4. Upgrade the firmware in modules and (if installed) front panel touchscreen display per the individual steps below.
     
    • Upgrade Modules

      NOTE: If a SAM is present in the rack, you may connect to any module with a USB port and it will communicate with all modules in the rack.  However, if a SAM is not present in the rack, you must connect to each module individually - intermodule communications are not supported.

      Once connected to the rack with SETPOINT Rack Maintenance software, click on the black bar where it says "Firmware Upgrade."  The software will auto-detect and display the currently installed firmware in each module.  It will also display the latest applicable firmware level to which each module may be upgraded.  The user is given the option to remain at the existing firmware level, or to upgrade.  Although users will typically want to simultaneously upgrade the firmware for every module in the rack, as well as the optional touchscreen display, upgrades can also be performed on a per-module basis by selecting or de-selecting the desired modules.  Updating SAM firmware will cause one or both processors in the SAM to reboot, depending on the type of firmware upgrade and which processor(s) it affects. One processor controls the CMS communications and touchscreen while the other processor controls Modbus communications.  A SAM reboot affects only the SAM; it will not affect UMMs and TMMs which continue to operate normally and provide machinery protective functions throughout the SAM upgrade process.

      CAUTION: When upgrading firmware in UMMs and TMMs, the affected module(s) will reboot during the firmware upgrade process and machinery protection from the module(s) will be momentarily suspended.  If you are using normally energized relays in the affected module(s), they will change state, which may result in an unwanted alarm or machinery trip.  You must take appropriate steps to physically jumper the contacts for such relays such that their change of state will not affect the machine.
       
    • Upgrade the Front Panel Display (if installed)

      Once connected to the rack with SETPOINT Rack Maintenance software, click on the black bar where it says "Firmware Upgrade."  The Write SD button in the upper-most menu will become active.  Clicking this button will prompt the user to navigate to the drive letter of their SD card (be sure you have placed the card in your computer's SD card reader slot).  Once this step is completed, the applicable firmware will be written to the SD card, which is then removed from the computer and inserted into the SD card slot in the rack’s eSAM module. The presence of this SD card will be automatically detected by the eSAM and the touchscreen firmware will be updated.  During the touchscreen update process, the eSAM's onboard processor that hosts the touchscreen software will reboot, momentarily interrupting the touchscreen display and also CMS data collection.  This does not affect the other processor in the eSAM, which handles Modbus communications and which will continue uninterrupted.  The SAM does not affect the operation of UMMs or TMMs in the rack, and machinery protective functions or relay states will not be affected during this reboot.
